The Band 6 descriptor says it exactly: "attempts to use less common vocabulary but with some inaccuracy". A big word used wrongly is a Band 6 word. A precise word used naturally is a Band 7 word. Learn the collocation and the sentence, not the word alone.
How to use this page
Pick one topic a day. Read each sentence aloud, then say your own version with the same word. Ten words in your mouth beat a hundred in a list. Then open a cue card on the same theme and use three of them in the booth.
What not to do
Do not learn "plethora", "myriad", "paramount" or "utilise". Examiners see them daily in essays that score 6.0. Do not memorise idioms; a wrong idiom sounds worse than none. Do not upgrade every "good" to "beneficial"; say what is good about it instead.
